Throughout the campaign, Murphy focused on his record of progressive policies and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. He touted his efforts to expand healthcare access, raise the minimum wage, and invest in infrastructure and education. Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, ran a spirited campaign that focused on lowering taxes, improving the state’s business climate, and addressing issues of affordability and public safety. While he garnered support from some voters in Middlesex County, it was ultimately not enough to overcome Murphy’s popularity and incumbency.
The outcome of the race in Middlesex County is a significant win for Murphy as he looks ahead to his second term as governor. It also underscores the importance of the county in New Jersey politics and the challenges facing Republicans in a state that has trended increasingly blue in recent years.
