New Jersey LCV announced its most diverse slate of candidates ever to receive its local and county office endorsement.
The 91 candidates New Jersey LCV supports in November’s local and county elections mirror our state’s population, the most diverse nation.
“After a rigorous vetting process, New Jersey LCV is proud to support a slate of candidates reflecting New Jersey’s great diversity,” said Allison McLeod, Senior Policy Director, New Jersey LCV. “The pro-conservation candidates highlight that clean air, pure drinking water, open spaces and parks, and clean energy are critical to every community in New Jersey. We believe our diversity is our strength, and our slate of candidates are prepared to show how strong environmental policies benefit families and the economy across New Jersey.”
While much attention this year is focused on Washington, elected officials at the local and county levels also play a critical role in environmental protection — from preserving open space to reducing development sprawl, and addressing flooding.
“Since the beginning of our local endorsement process, we have demonstrated how critical environmental protection is to voters from every corner of our state, who want clean drinking water, pure air, and climate solutions that create jobs and economic opportunities,” said Randy Jones, New Jersey LCV Board Chair.
In this year’s endorsements, 28 candidates are people of color, 11 come from environmental justice communities, eight are members of the LGBT community, six are veterans, and two are candidates with disabilities. In addition, 48 of 91 candidates are women. While representing a diversity of New Jersey voters, all candidates are committed to championing local environmental causes.
New Jersey LCV endorsed candidates from across the state, with 15 counties represented and a mix of incumbents and challengers.
In Neptune Township, New Jersey LCV has endorsed Derel Stroud for the Township Committee. Stroud is taking his experience as a candidate of color in an environmental justice community to advocate for offshore wind, a clean energy source that will improve air quality in Monmouth County while creating union jobs.
In recent years, flooding and storm events have increased across the Garden State, damaging homes and businesses. New Jersey LCV also supports a slate of pro-environment candidates running for Camden County commissioner, including Melinda Kane, Jeffery Nash, and Al Dyer. Flooding events have challenged residents in Camden, particularly the City of Camden, a combined sewer overflow community.
