The Latino Action Network is proud to support the candidacy of Senator Nellie Pou as she officially announces her run for the 9th Congressional District, following the passing of her friend and mentor, Bill Pascrell, Jr. Senator Pou’s decision to run for this seat marks a transformative moment for the Latino community and for progressive values in New Jersey. With over 25 years of tireless service to the people of Passaic and Bergen counties, Pou is exceptionally qualified to represent the district’s diverse population, which also includes parts of Hudson County. This is the second time Pou has stepped up to continue Pascrell’s legacy, having succeeded him in the New Jersey Assembly when he was first elected to Congress.
As the only Hispanic candidate in a district where 42% of the population identifies as Hispanic, 38% as White, and 8% as Black, Pou’s election would represent a historic milestone as the first Latina to serve New Jersey in the U.S. Congress in 236 years. This achievement would not only celebrate our state’s rich cultural diversity but also ensure that our community’s voices are heard in national policy matters.
“New Jersey has a Statewide population of over 22% Latina/o/x the most significant single minority in the state, which is not reflected in the numbers of Latino elected officials in state or federal office’, said Latino Action Network President Javier Robles. “This needs change, and our organization calls on all democratically elected officials to ensure we have the first Latina congresswoman from New Jersey!”
Pou has been a champion for progressive causes on a national level, gaining recognition as President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) from 2022-23. Her leadership was instrumental in organizing a delegation of Hispanic elected officials from across 10 states and Puerto Rico to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House in March 2022. This meeting underscored the importance of addressing legislative priorities for Hispanics in New Jersey and across the United States. Pou also facilitated an important policy discussion with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi during an NHCSL meeting in San Francisco in July 2023, highlighting the need for inclusive and equitable policies.
Throughout her career in the New Jersey General Assembly and State Senate, Pou has been a steadfast advocate for social and criminal justice reform, as well as human and civil rights. As Chair of the New Jersey Senate Commerce Committee and Vice Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, she has consistently fought for economic justice and against systemic inequities that burden working families and marginalized communities. Her leadership as Chairwoman of the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus and within the NHCSL has sharpened her focus on advancing progressive policies that uplift all communities.
“Nellie Pou’s candidacy represents a powerful moment for New Jersey and for Latinos nationwide. Her experience and dedication to justice and equity make her uniquely qualified to carry on Bill Pascrell’s legacy while bringing a bold, progressive voice to Congress,” continued Robles. “We are confident that Senator Pou will hit the ground running in Washington, D.C., advocating for affordable housing, economic opportunity, and accessible healthcare for all. Her partnership with Vice President Harris in championing reproductive rights and social justice is exactly the leadership we need at this critical time.”
In addition to her legislative achievements, Pou has been a key player in fostering economic growth that benefits all communities. She has championed initiatives that support small businesses and promote entrepreneurship, ensuring that economic development leads to job creation and stability for all residents.
Education and healthcare have also been central to Pou’s mission. She has led efforts to make education more accessible and affordable, from early childhood through higher education, and has been a tireless advocate for ensuring that quality healthcare is available to everyone, regardless of income or background. Her commitment to expanding voter participation has strengthened our democracy, making it easier for every eligible citizen to exercise their right to vote.
With her progressive values, deep experience, and unwavering dedication, Senator Nellie Pou is poised to make history in the 9th Congressional District. Her leadership will inspire future generations and strengthen the fabric of our democracy.
