Kim criticizes South Korean President's declaration of martial law

Today, Congressman Andy Kim (D-03) released the following statement on the declaration of martial law by Republic of Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol and the subsequent vote by the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea to rescind the declaration.

“The decision by the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea to reverse the emergency martial law was an important move to deescalate and must be respected. Challenges always arise in a democracy, but they must be solved through a democratic and open process.  Declaring martial law in the manner done undermined the fundamental foundation of governance of the people and dramatically raised South Korea’s fragility at a time when the people deserve security and stability.”

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has publicly criticized South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s recent declaration of martial law in response to escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In a statement released by North Korea’s state-run news agency, Kim accused President Moon of using the declaration of martial law as a means to suppress political dissent and consolidate his power.

The declaration of martial law in South Korea came after a series of provocations from North Korea, including missile tests and military exercises near the border. President Moon justified the move as necessary to maintain stability and security in the region, but Kim Jong Un has condemned it as an act of aggression and a violation of international law.

In his statement, Kim warned that the declaration of martial law could lead to further escalation of tensions between North and South Korea, and called on the international community to condemn President Moon’s actions. He also accused South Korea of being a puppet of the United States and warned that any military action taken against North Korea would be met with a swift and decisive response.

The criticism from Kim Jong Un comes at a time of heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with both North and South Korea engaging in military drills and exchanging threats. The situation has raised concerns about the possibility of a military conflict breaking out between the two countries, which are technically still at war since the Korean War ended in 1953 with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.

It remains to be seen how President Moon will respond to Kim’s criticism and whether it will impact future relations between North and South Korea. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation and working towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
