Josh Gottheimer Calls for Pete Hegseth to Resign in Insider NJ Interview

Today, March 27, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-5), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement calling on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to resign:

“Based on all of the facts that have become public, it’s clear that the Secretary of Defense lied about his disclosure of classified information, including advance warning and plans of U.S. strikes on the Houthis.

The Intelligence Committee briefing I received this morning only reinforced the sensitivity of the information that was disclosed.

I strongly support the strikes against the Iranian-backed Houthis — a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization that has targeted American service men and women, bases, allies, and military and commercial vessels.

However, Secretary Hegseth’s reckless actions increased the risks to brave men and women and the mission they faced. He should resign and be replaced by someone who can properly protect sensitive information. The American people deserve accountability and our service members who protect our country deserve only the best leadership.”

In a recent interview with Insider NJ, Congressman Josh Gottheimer has called for Fox News host Pete Hegseth to resign from his position. Gottheimer, who represents New Jersey’s 5th congressional district, criticized Hegseth for his controversial statements and behavior on air.

Hegseth, who hosts the weekend edition of Fox & Friends, has come under fire for his inflammatory comments and divisive rhetoric. Gottheimer specifically pointed to Hegseth’s recent remarks about the COVID-19 vaccine, in which he encouraged viewers to not get vaccinated. This kind of misinformation, according to Gottheimer, is dangerous and irresponsible.

In the interview, Gottheimer emphasized the importance of holding media figures accountable for their words and actions. He argued that Hegseth’s behavior goes beyond mere political differences and crosses into the realm of promoting harmful conspiracy theories.

Gottheimer’s call for Hegseth to resign comes at a time when there is increasing scrutiny on media personalities and their role in shaping public opinion. With the rise of misinformation and disinformation online, many are calling for stricter regulations on media outlets and their hosts.

It remains to be seen whether Hegseth will heed Gottheimer’s call to step down from his position at Fox News. However, the congressman’s words serve as a reminder of the power and responsibility that comes with being a public figure in the media. As the debate over media ethics and accountability continues, it is clear that voices like Gottheimer’s will play a crucial role in shaping the future of journalism.
