Cryan expresses opposition to Trump's proposal to eliminate Education Department - Insider NJ

Senator Joe Cryan, chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee and co-chair of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools, issued the following statement denouncing President Trump’s plan to dissolve the U. S. Department of Education:

“This is a blind-sighted move with devastating consequences for New Jersey, our schools, students and communities. The scheme to dissolve the department will cause irreparable harm at all levels of education, from pre-K through college.

“Removing or reducing the federal role in higher education will deny many students access to college and narrow their career opportunities. Disrupting the student loan system and eliminating repayment options would be an economic catastrophe for students and their families, resulting in higher rates of default and greater debt.

“The attacks on the Title I program, which supports education in underserved communities, and on the special education services that aid students with disabilities are heartless actions that will harm vulnerable children and their families.

“Adding to the distress is the chaos and confusion in the implementation of the directive and the uncertain fate of the department and its functions. There are no real plans, no realistic contingencies and no reasonable ideas on how the dismantling of the department will be executed. That means the uncertainty will continue.

“But there is no doubt that students and their families will be the first to suffer and the educational community in New Jersey will pay a heavy price.”

In a recent statement, New Jersey Senator Patrick Cryan has expressed strong opposition to President Trump’s proposal to eliminate the Department of Education. Cryan, a vocal advocate for education and the importance of investing in our nation’s future, believes that dismantling the Education Department would have detrimental effects on students, teachers, and the overall education system.

Cryan argues that the Department of Education plays a crucial role in ensuring that all students have access to a quality education, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. By providing funding, resources, and support to schools across the country, the Education Department helps to level the playing field and give every child the opportunity to succeed.

Furthermore, Cryan points out that eliminating the Education Department would also have negative implications for teachers. The department provides valuable training, professional development, and support for educators, helping them to improve their skills and better serve their students. Without this support, teachers would be left to fend for themselves, potentially leading to a decline in the quality of education.

In addition to the impact on students and teachers, Cryan is concerned about the broader implications of eliminating the Education Department. He believes that doing so would send a message that education is not a priority for the Trump administration, potentially leading to cuts in funding for schools and programs that benefit students.

Overall, Cryan’s opposition to Trump’s proposal is rooted in his belief that education is a fundamental right and a key driver of success in our society. He is calling on lawmakers to reject this proposal and instead work towards strengthening and improving our education system for the benefit of all students.
