Statement of Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin on Woodbridge Township Shooting
Two members of our law enforcement community – one from the Woodbridge Police Department and one from the New York City Police Department – are recovering from injuries this morning after being shot overnight in the line of duty while attempting to locate a suspect in a homicide. Details of that incident will be released by my office later today.
This incident is another reminder that our law enforcement officers risk their lives daily to keep our communities safe. Their resilience deserves our unwavering support. As the state’s top law enforcement officer, I am resolute in working with our law enforcement partners to complete a thorough and complete investigation and to do everything in my power to prevent this kind of violence against law enforcement in the future.
I have been in communication with both the Woodbridge Township Police Department and the New York City Police Department. The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating the incident, in which one individual, the suspect, was shot and killed at the scene.
While we’re grateful for the brave and swift actions taken by all who responded, we also remember that no police officer – or any member of law enforcement – should ever face this violence while performing their duties. Officers take enormous risks on a daily basis to keep our communities safe. We must continue to work together to prevent and disrupt gun violence of every kind in New Jersey.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the law enforcement partners who promptly responded to the incident, and work tirelessly every day to ensure the security of our communities. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the two officers who were injured, as well as all of the responding officers, their loved ones, the Woodbridge Police Department and the New York City Police Department, and all families impacted by gun violence.
