New Jersey Politicians, Including Sherrill, Criticize Guns – Insider NJ

In the wake of recent mass shootings across the United States, politicians in New Jersey are speaking out against gun violence and advocating for stricter gun control laws. Among these politicians is Representative Mikie Sherrill, who has been a vocal advocate for gun safety measures since taking office in 2019.

Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, has been a leading voice in Congress on the issue of gun violence prevention. She has co-sponsored several bills aimed at reducing gun violence, including the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019.

In a recent op-ed for Insider NJ, Sherrill wrote that “we cannot continue to accept the unacceptable when it comes to gun violence in this country.” She called for common-sense gun safety measures such as universal background checks and red flag laws, which allow law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.

Sherrill’s stance on gun control is shared by many other New Jersey politicians, including Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Cory Booker. Murphy has signed several gun control bills into law since taking office in 2018, including measures that require background checks for private gun sales and ban high-capacity magazines.

Booker, who is also running for president in 2020, has made gun violence prevention a central issue of his campaign. He has proposed a comprehensive gun control plan that includes universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, and a federal licensing system for gun owners.

Despite the efforts of Sherrill, Murphy, Booker, and others, there are still many obstacles to passing meaningful gun control legislation at the federal level. The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other pro-gun groups have significant influence over many lawmakers, particularly those in Republican-controlled states.

However, the recent wave of mass shootings has sparked renewed public outrage and calls for action on gun control. As more politicians like Sherrill speak out against gun violence and advocate for common-sense gun safety measures, there is hope that progress can be made in reducing the number of gun deaths in the United States.
