Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12) hosted the 4th &Girls conference at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), a day-long seminar to engage, uplift and empower Black girls in middle and high school.
The first &Girls conference was held in 2017. It is part of the ongoing work of the members of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls to highlight and address the unique needs and issues impacting Black girls.
More than 100 girls attended the conference, which featured five breakout sessions and addresses by prominent Black women leaders, including NJ Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), several members of the New Jersey General Assembly, as well as local officials, academics, and business leaders.
“I know personally the challenges Black girls face in this world,” said Rep. Watson Coleman. “Opportunities don’t present themselves to us, we have to create them. That’s part of what we try to do with this conference. Empower Black girls, engage with them and lift them up so they know that they belong in every room they find themselves in. So they know their voices are valued, their contributions necessary, and their ideas should be heard. Spending the day with so many wonderful leaders and so many brilliant young people never fails to fill my heart with joy and hope for the future.”
“Young Black girls are taking control and advocating for what they need and deserve to lead happy, healthy lives — despite the challenges in their way,” said Rep. Robin Kelly. “The conference is a reminder that they are not alone in their efforts. I, and so many Black women leaders, am here to encourage them and applaud every step they take.”
“It was an honor to attend the 4th Annual &Girls Conference and meet with the young women who will play a pivotal role in shaping a better world,” said Acting Governor Tahesha Way. “In this often challenging time in our world, it is crucial for Black women and girls to forge our own paths towards success. I am profoundly inspired by the young women already championing justice and equity, building on the legacy of those who paved the way before them.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Representative Watson Coleman and all participants of the 4th &Girls Conference,” said TCNJ President Micahel Bernstein. “The extraordinary leaders, innovators, educators, and community members participating in this conference are dedicated to celebrating and supporting these young women. We are proud to embrace this mission and provide an environment for learning and development.”

Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman recently hosted a conference aimed at engaging and empowering black girls in the community. The event, titled “Black Girls Lead: Empowering the Next Generation,” brought together young black girls from various backgrounds to participate in workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities.
The conference was held in response to the unique challenges that black girls face in society, including systemic racism, gender discrimination, and lack of representation in leadership roles. Watson Coleman recognized the importance of providing a space for these girls to come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other.
The conference featured a variety of speakers and panel discussions on topics such as self-esteem, leadership, and advocacy. Participants had the opportunity to hear from successful black women who have overcome obstacles and achieved their goals. They also engaged in interactive workshops focused on building confidence, developing leadership skills, and creating positive change in their communities.
One of the key goals of the conference was to inspire and empower black girls to pursue their dreams and become leaders in their own right. By providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, Watson Coleman hopes to create a new generation of strong, confident, and empowered young women who can make a difference in the world.
Overall, the “Black Girls Lead” conference was a resounding success, with participants leaving feeling inspired, motivated, and ready to take on the world. By investing in the potential of black girls and providing them with the support they need to thrive, Watson Coleman is helping to create a brighter future for all.
