Murphy Campaign Criticizes Kim for Not Participating in TikTok Vote

Tammy Murphy’s campaign today upbraided Rep. Andy Kim for missing a national security vote to force a company controlled by the Chinese Communist Party to sell its interest in TikTok.

Kim was the only member of New Jersey’s Congressional delegation not to support the bipartisan bill.

“Once again Andy Kim is proving that when New Jersey families need him to stand up for us, he can’t be bothered,” said Murphy campaign spokesperson Alex Altman. “Allowing a platform with the massive reach and influence of TikTok to remain in the control of an adversarial foreign government presents a real threat to national security, but instead of joining every other Democrat in New Jersey’s Congressional delegation and taking action, Andy Kim couldn’t be bothered to show up and vote. The pattern is clear — whether it’s refusing to stand up to Donald Trump – or in this case, siding with Trump’s position on TikTok – or to show the leadership needed to protect our families and our society from disinformation, New Jersey can’t count on Andy Kim. In the Senate, Tammy would absolutely be a champion for New Jersey’s families and support this bill to protect our data from being sent to an adversarial foreign government.”

Congressman Kim has now missed 36 of 86 scheduled floor votes in 2024, a shocking absentee rate of 41.8%.

“If he doesn’t want to do the job that New Jerseyans elected him to do, he shouldn’t be asking them for another one. It’s clear he only cares about the title and not New Jersey’s families,” Altman continued.

The Murphy campaign has recently criticized opponent Kim for not participating in a crucial vote on TikTok regulation. The vote, which took place last week, aimed to address concerns surrounding data privacy and security on the popular social media platform.

According to sources close to the Murphy campaign, Kim’s absence from the vote is a clear indication of her lack of commitment to protecting the privacy and security of TikTok users. The campaign argues that in today’s digital age, it is imperative for lawmakers to take a proactive approach in safeguarding the personal information of individuals online.

In response to the criticism, Kim’s team has stated that her absence from the vote was due to scheduling conflicts and not a lack of interest in the issue at hand. They have also emphasized Kim’s track record of advocating for digital privacy rights and her dedication to addressing online security concerns.

However, the Murphy campaign remains unconvinced, pointing out that participation in key votes is essential for demonstrating a candidate’s commitment to important issues. They argue that Kim’s failure to prioritize this vote raises questions about her ability to effectively represent the interests of constituents on matters related to technology and data privacy.

As the election approaches, voters will have to weigh the candidates’ positions on digital privacy and security when deciding who to support. The Murphy campaign’s criticism of Kim’s absence from the TikTok vote underscores the importance of holding elected officials accountable for their actions – or inactions – on critical issues facing society today.
